Connections is the stuff that life is made of. "Connections are the reason why we are here." Brene Brown Ph.D. LSW
The Connections the Horses Build:
Today's youth struggle with many complicated social issues. They have to make many difficult choices in the face of much pressure, more than ever before. How do we make friends? How do we deal with bullies?
Common Questions from Youth: Why aren't I part of that group? What are "good" friends anyway? How can I communicate and make everybody "get it"? How can I make these awful bullies go away? What can I do about all this drama? How can I deal with these problems and conflicts? Why can't you leave me alone? Why don't they really see me and who I am? How can I be more confident and feel better about myself?
There are strategies to be learned from the herd, and we can practice them together. These social skills group experiences are facilitated by horses, a horse professional and teacher, and a licensed social worker. The activities are on the ground (not riding) and they are exciting, enlightening, challenging, sometimes frustrating, always meaningful and life changing.
However, the most powerful result offered through this connection, is the accomplishments, the greater sense of worthiness, and competency. The Soul the Barn BuildsThe following is an excerpt from an article written by Kristen Carpenter, teacher and judge, Morningside Training Farm, Va. "The barn will build your soul, and it will give you all the gifts you need to be a good, gracious person. It is up to us to keep these things when we pass through the gate. If you related to any part of this, you are lucky. Many go through life never really feeling passion; they only have material possessions to try and satisfy their souls. But to the souls the barn built, life is about sitting in a warm rain on a summer day and laughing with friends. It is about lying on the back of a horse or in a field and staring at the stars. I wish I could give this gift to every child I work with."
